AI, Forecasting and Better Decision-Making

One question we’re hearing more often from campus leaders is this: How can we forecast more accurately and use that insight to make better decisions sooner?

Over the past three years, our team has partnered closely with one institution to strengthen its net tuition revenue and program profitability forecasting. Building on a foundation of strong data governance, the recent introduction of AI has further accelerated the process, delivering deeper insight with greater speed and precision.

What once required weeks of manual work can now be completed in one to two hours, and in some cases minutes.

Better forecasting does not just improve accuracy. It improves confidence and decision-making.

As accuracy improved, so did confidence in the outcome. In fact, in the first session the new process was applied, forecasts were accurate within a narrow range of a few students.

More importantly, these insights have helped leaders:

  • Identify where the institution could be more budget-conscious
  • Make staffing and resource decisions earlier with clearer data
  • Reinvest in programs that are truly succeeding and rethink those that are not

In one case, program-level analysis surfaced that a particular program previously assumed to be underperforming was actually one of the institution’s most profitable offerings. That insight sparked broader conversations about modality, delivery models and the student experience.

A key learning from this work is that AI does not replace institutional expertise. It amplifies it. Human review, context and decision making remain essential, particularly when reconciling data, identifying exceptions and ensuring accuracy.

With clean data and clear governance, this approach is repeatable and scalable, offering a new way for institutions to think about planning, performance and sustainability.

What this means for leaders:
Institutions that combine disciplined data practices with thoughtful use of AI gain earlier visibility, greater confidence and more time to focus on strategic decisions rather than manual analysis.

We are sharing this as an early example of how institutions are pairing data discipline with AI to support clearer, more confident decision making. Click the button below to book a complimentary AI consultation to discover if this solution could help your campus.
