DATA GOVERNANCE COUNCIL

Establishing a data governance council is an important first step toward creating successful data policies and practices that map to your data governance principles. Council members could be drawn from your administration team, academic department heads, or other key individuals who manage the institution’s data assets.

The Council’s main responsibility is to ensure that data is handled, maintained, and used in a way that aligns with the institution’s purpose and goals, legal and regulatory requirements, and ethical considerations.

DATA GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE

Your data governance committee reports up to the data governance council and informs the institution’s president and cabinet. The Committee’s primary responsibility is driving the workstreams of subcommittees that might include:

Data process and standards: Determines processes for the collection, storage, and maintenance of data and how data’s entered into systems and kept up to date.
Data security: Focuses on hardware, software, and legal security processes to protect the validity and confidential status of your data throughout its life cycle.
Data infrastructure: Establishes architectures and structures for how your data is integrated between applications and used across your campus by various systems.
