DATA GOVERNANCE
Data is only useful if it’s intentionally managed. We’ll help you create an enterprise data governance program that aligns data to your business needs and adds value to your institution. Your data governance program will ensure your data is secure, private, accurate, available, and usable.
A properly crafted data governance program includes the actions people should take, the processes they must follow, and the technology that supports them throughout the data life cycle. Think of it as the owner’s manual for your business intelligence data solution.
No Chief Data Officer? No problem. We’ll help you develop a strategic governance plan to turn your data into assets with metrics and KPIs to help drive informed decision-making.

DATA PRINCIPLES
Working together, our first step will be to document your institution’s data principles. These principles comprise a foundational document that your data governance committee creates to guide data-informed decisions.
Data principles to be followed might include, among others:
- Data is managed as a shared asset to maximize business value and reduce risk.
- Data as an asset is treated with the same care and attention to detail as other institutional assets such as financial, physical and human.
- Data governance is a program and a business discipline which needs ongoing investment, support, and promotion to all in the institution.
- Data stewardship decisions, policies and procedures are clearly and transparently communicated to all stakeholders.
- All individuals in the University understand their roles and responsibilities in the data governance program and are actively engaged in the process.
- Data is used responsibly and ethically throughout the entire institution.
- Data security and privacy is a core discipline at all levels of the institution and training is offered regularly to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Data quality standards are well defined, shared with stakeholders and continually monitored for compliance.

DATA GOVERNANCE LIBRARY
Creating and maintaining a data governance library is an important step in providing a common language for your governance program to ensure clear, well-defined communications that’ll promote stakeholder alignment across your campus.
We can help you build a data governance library that includes:
- Business glossary
- Data dictionary
- Measures and metrics
DATA GOVERNANCE COUNCIL
Establishing a data governance council is an important first step toward creating successful data policies and practices that map to your data governance principles. Council members could be drawn from your administration team, academic department heads, or other key individuals who manage the institution’s data assets.
The Council’s main responsibility is to ensure that data is handled, maintained, and used in a way that aligns with the institution’s purpose and goals, legal and regulatory requirements, and ethical considerations.
DATA GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE
Your data governance committee reports up to the data governance council and informs the institution’s president and cabinet. The Committee’s primary responsibility is driving the workstreams of subcommittees that might include:
- Data process and standards: Determines processes for the collection, storage, and maintenance of data and how data’s entered into systems and kept up to date.
- Data security: Focuses on hardware, software, and legal security processes to protect the validity and confidential status of your data throughout its life cycle.
- Data infrastructure: Establishes architectures and structures for how your data is integrated between applications and used across your campus by various systems.
